Welcome to Alice Buntings A2 Media Studies G324: Advanced Portfolio in Media

My Blog contains all of my research and planning which eventually helped me to complete my coursework. It also includes my opinions about the coursework progress; what I would change, what would stay the same and what parts of the coursework were effective. Overall I utilised the blog as a way to document my coursework, and found this was an effective way to keep on track throughout the coursework process.

SCRIPT: PLANNING

Script for music video:

We have created this script for our music video which we will use when filming our video. It follows a specific plot line which I found was effective during my research of music videos. The script includes stage directions and speech which we can follow directly during the production of our video, which means we will not waste allocated time and are less likely to fall behind with deadlines.

Opening begins with a young girl sitting on her bed, obviously distressed and upset looking at her phone, sending a text message to her boyfriend saying “ I saw you and her…walking in the rain!”.

KATIE. Sighs piteously and folds her arms across her body, staring complacently into space

Then you are immediately, focused on the Katie’s boyfriend in another location (his bedroom), receiving the text message off the girl

TOM. Sighs, rubbing his head agitatedly. He gets up from his bed and immediately walks over to the window, appearing distressed and confused.

KATIE. Strokes picture of her and her boyfriend as she recalls old memories.

TOM. A straight cut of the boyfriend is depicted; who looks upset and is now lying on his bed in a daze after receiving this text. He walks around in his bedroom repeatedly looking out the window, whereby a close up of his face is shown.

KATIE.
Katie steps up in the same position as her boyfriend, again looking outside the window. She suddenly recalls a flashback of her boyfriend with another girl, holding hands. Attempting to forget this memory, she begins getting ready for a night out.

Katie starts putting on her make up and changing outfits and dancing in her room.

KATIE.
She sings the lyrics in the mirror; “I saw you and her… walking in the rain… you were holding hands and I… will never be the same

Katie recalls another flashback of seeing her boyfriend with another girl, which interrupts her, whilst she is getting ready.

KATIE.
Katie storms out the house, determined not to cry, whilst recalling flashbacks of her and her boyfriend laughing together. Katie begins to walk up the same road where she saw her boyfriend and the mystery girl holding hands.

Finally, after recollecting these memories the audience observes Katie from behind walking off in the rain, all on her own.

ENDING.

Production schedule: PLANNING

Production Schedule:

My group and I are going to give ourselves one week to film our music video; this will give us ample amounts of time to shoot different camera shots and movements within different locations, especially because we only have three main locations, which are in a bedroom, a club setting and a street outside. We will also give ourselves one week for editing and finalising our music video, by adding special effects and the non diagetic soundtrack, which will improve the quality of our final piece and allow us to put the scenes together in a congruent way.
The following dates we will run by

Shooting Schedule:

• Monday 2nd November 2009 – Film the club scene at school, using a variety of different characters.
• Wednesday 4th November 2009 –. Look at location for opening scene and check it is suitable, get costume ready for characters and film opening scenes for female character at chosen location.
• Friday 5th November 2009 – Film the middle and ending scenes, using both characters.

Editing Schedule:

• Monday 9th November 2009- Upload video on ‘I-movies’ editing programme.
• Tuesday 10th November 2009- Upload the chosen song onto ‘I-movies’ editing programme.
• Wednesday 11th November 2009 – Begin to edit and delete any unnecessary scenes.
• Thursday 12th November – Continue to Edit, finalise scenes.
• Friday 13th November 2009 – Finish editing, upload onto disc.

I am aware that as a group we must follow this schedule so we keep on track; from previous experience I know that keeping to a deadline is important as allows more time to complete our work to a high standard. Therefore I will attempt to stick to these deadlines rigidly, as it is the only way we will be able to produce the video throughout a two week period.

Band/Artist: PLANNING

Band/ Artist:

The Artists we have chosen to use is ‘Sublime’, using the song, ‘Walking in the rain’, this song is an unknown dance track. We thought this song was appropriate for our target audience and audience profile because the songs genre is dance, which was the most popular genre of music in our questionnaires. The song itself is fast paced which was included in my group members questionnaire results in aspects of the music they enjoy listening to. This also made the track more relevant to the hardcore/dance genre, in contrast to just the dance genre. This means that we will represent the artist following codes and conventions of the dance/hardcore genre. Our audience would not be gender specific as both genders are attracted to the song, however we will target more females than males because the lead vocalist is female, which will attract more of a female audience. The age range would be about 17/18; our target audience, as they would be the most likely age range attracted to enjoy this track.

The artist herself, 'Sublime' will be really easy to mould to audiences expectations because she is extremely commercial; following post modern fashion styles and allowing herself to follow the typical codes and conventions of the hardcore genre. Some examples of conventions which our artist follows is being attractive. This means she would be viewed as empowering to women, allowing herself to be portrayed as a post modern feminist, which would increase her popularity. This also means she would be sexually appealing to men and therefore this may help us to increase our target audience. Another advantage of our artist is that the song itself is also extremely commercially viable within the dance/hardcore genre as it is similar to other popular songs where the track is 'built up', then 'released' in the chorus, allowing audiences to dance to it, which is extremely important within this genre. Overall I am extremely happy with the song chosen as it is produced to a very high quality. This means as a group we have an extremely good base to our music video and it means we are more likely to produce it to a high standard, as the artist and song itself is equal to this.

Target audience Sample:

Based on our research with our questionaries and within the dance/hardcore genre itself we have decided on an target audience sample. This will help us during production of the artist as it will give us a realistic view on who to target our product at, meaning it is more likely to be sucsessful.

Planning

Now I have finished the research stage of my coursework and compiled my results into a video, I need to start the planning aspect of my video. The planning of the video needs to include:

Band
Pitch
Synopsis
Script
Location
Storyboard
Shooting Schedule
Drafts
Mock ups

This will help me during the production of my video as it will mean I am more organised and less likely to fall behind which is a problem I encountered last year.

Research Results Video. RESEARCH

I have finished all my research and now need to summarise my results; using a video with my group partner, Elizabeth.

We created a video of us both talking about what we found and how we would utilise this during the planning of our media, to evaluate our research together. We used sound clips to help improve the quality of our piece and used media terminology to also improve video quality. During this week, we firstly filmed the video and then spent a few days editing and uploading the video. This also helped the video seem more congruent and flow better, resulting in a good quality video; therefore I am pleased with the results and hard work we both put in.

Audience Profile: RESEARCH

An audience profile is a set of data providing an example of a person who would consume the media you are deciding to produce. An audience profile is commonly used so that institutions have a better idea of who to target their media product at, which it helps the institution reach the biggest range of the target audience. For my particular media; a music video, CD cover and advert I chose my audience profile based on the research I have completed and following the target audiences of the dance/hardcore genre itself. During research I found that dance/ hardcore music usually appeals to a younger audience, ranging from the age of 17-25. This is because as an age group they are more likely to be going out to clubs and similar locations, where dance music is frequently played to produce a good atmosphere. Consequently, the dance/hardcore genre – particularly dance – appeals to this age group and most dance/hardcore music is marketed towards this age group. Therefore I decided to choose the age of 18 as part of my audience profile, because it is comparable to our target audience and will give us a clear idea of a profile of a person that would consume our media.
Another part of my audience profile which I had to decide on was gender, which was equally as important as the age because it has an effect of the storyline of the video, colour schemes of the CD covers and also deciding of the song itself. During research I found a lot of dance/hardcore tracks focus female vocals and consequently this leads to a bigger female following and interest than males. As I have an idea of the song I want to use, which ideally would focus a female vocalist; it would make more sense to pick a female in the audience profile, as this would be a more likely result in effect to the song which we will pick. Another part of the audience profile was favorite music genre and obviously the favorite genre of music of the audience profile would have to be dance/hardcore, because this will be the genre of music we will focus on throughout the production of our video and whilst deciding on choosing a song.
The final part of the audience profile I decided to include was way to consume media. Although this seems a little random, it relates to the production of our music video as it gives us a clear idea of the consuming habits of our audience, which will help us when deciding on an advert and how to produce it. For example, if an audience profiles was to consume media through the internet, during production we would have to ensure that the CD cover would still look as high-quality when displayed in smaller pixels, as often is the case on the internet. However, from the questionnaire, I found that the most common way to consume media (within our age group), is through an Mp3 player which made my job relatively easy. Therefore I chose to use this way of consuming media and include it in my audience profile. As a group, we will now know that the song needs to be marketed as if it would be consumed through a mp3 player, and I will bear this in mind during the advertisement of the CD cover, considering to add the ‘I-tunes’ label as if it could be brought from there. This would mean our song would be more popular with our target audience and would be able to be listened to in a variety of different ways, making it easier for the audience during consuming our media.
